Glass Door Cabinet at THE VICTORIAN

I absolutely love neighborhood shops that provide a source for beautiful, reasonably-priced furnishings to their surrounding community.

Yesterday, I stopped into The Victorian, a workspace in Bedford-Stuyvesant chunk full of great-looking pieces in various states of repair. This modest cabinet caught my eye as nothing extravagant but potentially useful and in need of just a little work. The owner will sell it "as-is" for $60 or you can purchase it completely refurbished and stained for $150. Not a bad deal.

Pitch Black by DAVID ADJAYE

Architect, David Adjaye designed this studio of visual artists Lorna Simpson and James Casebere in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn. Proof that contemporary architecture can coexist with neighboring historic homes without being too imposing, harsh, or visually condescending. Up close, the outer walls have the look of a woven textile and the more tactile among us can barely resist touching the surface.

More information and images of the building can be found here

Concrete and Stone in the Garden

What is it that happens when you put ornate urns and stone sculptures in a garden?

Definitely something.
Is it structure in nature, a sense of pedigree, or simply a hint of romance?

Brocade Upholstered Chairs @ the Brooklyn Flea

A pair of semi-wingback (is there a more proper name these?) chairs upholstered in golden yellow brocade.  Mahagony base, solidly built, and heavy. I considered purchasing to reupholster in grey wool. Offer was a negotiable $250 for the pair.

Mantel Display - Eucalyptus

The neutral palatte in this room is nice as is the black painted fireplace.  What is that exact part called and what was its function in old Brooklyn brownstones?

Picnic Table in a Suitcase

A clever vintage piece, this folds up to be contained in a suitcase-like bag for transporting. A contemporary version is manufactured by Picnic at Ascot, recently featured on One Kings Lane.  My mother, who lives a beach lifestyle, had the marvelous idea of using one for al fresco dining at the water's edge.

Eames LCW Chairs: In Conversation

If it's possible for a chair's form to evoke personality and character, than the Eames LCW takes the prize.  The two pictured here actually seem to be in conversation with one another.

Ornament Galore

Lots of decorative accessories can work, especially if the palatte is restrained as it is here. While a number of styles are displayed in this room, overall the room emanates Art Nouveau.  Of course, the design historians are welcome to call me out on this.

Secret Garden

There is something utterly romantic about a slightly overgrown garden with it's winding paths, hidden nooks, and haunting figures.  Late summer or early fall are certainly when they are at their best.

Iris by FLAVOR PAPER

It's hard to tell from the online image, but the colors in these papers are metallic! They remind me of this amazing wallpaper that my grandmother used to have in her master bathroom. It was silver with a yellow and green vine pattern.I've contacted Flavor paper to see if I'm able to purchase a small piece to frame as artwork. Oh I hope they are willing to accommodate my whimsical nostalgia!

This pattern goes for $300/roll.
